The Rope & Knot Collection
This series began in 2020 as little more than a visual experiment. What would it be like to weave a tapestry that described the process of its own making, one thread passing over and under another? I wove one initial piece - and then kept going.
Over time, I came to think of the threads as “ropes”, that most hardy, functional and masculine of the textile arts, now incorporated into the decorative and the feminine. And the “knots” became loops with no beginning and no end, interlinking whorls criss-crossing in impossible directions.
The winding ropes and drawings of knots that I returned to over and over across the years became a way not of describing the weaving process, but of reimagining it, subverting it. To what end, I don’t yet know. This series is far from concluded, but these are the pieces I’ve made so far.
